Hibiscus (Mallow)

The JLBG collection includes about 17 species (including subspecies and varieties), 1 undetermined; 170 clones

Our gallery focues on the perennial species that are winter hardy here in Zone 7b. We do not include the hardy woody species like Hibiscus syriacus or the tropical Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.

Winter hardy hibiscus have been popular for centuries, but significant breeding advancements didn't occur until the 1950s, when Robert Darby first made splashes in the horticultural world. This was follow by the groundbreaking work of the Fleming Brothers of Nebraska, which further refined the forms and added colorful foliage. Their work was built on by Hans Hansen, or Michigan, who greatly improved the foliage color, flower color, plant form, and flower form.  Below is a gallery of both species and hybrids.
