Liriope (Monkey Grass)

The JLBG collection includes about 9 species (including subspecies and varieties), 6 unknown and at least 1 new species; 114 clones

Liriope have been a taxonomic mess for quite a while. One of our goals has been to work with other researchers to sort out the taxonomy. In 2014, we worked with Dr. Jason Lattier and Dr. Tom Ranney on a research paper to sort out some of the cultivars and their asssigned species.

In 2015, we collaborated with Dr. Paul Fantz and Dr. Jason Lattier on yet another paper on Liriope taxonomy and identification.

In 2019, we collaborated with Dr. Aaron Floden to publish Liriope vernalis, a new species from our collection, originally collected in China by plantsman Darrell Probst. https://www.phytoneuron.net/2019Phytoneuron/62PhytoN-Liriopevernalis.pdf

JLBG most likely houses the world's most extensive liriope collection. We hope to have several more new liriope species from the garden published as time permits.
