Podophyllum (Mayapples)

The JLBG collection includes about 12 species, 5 nothospecies and 26 other hybrids- 141 clones

JLBG holds a rather large collection of Podophyllum/Dysosma/Sinopodophyllum. Based on the prevailing wind, taxonomists either consider these different genera or the same, based on new DNA techniques. If you consider them different genera, then our hybrids between the two would need to become a new bigeneric genus x Podosma. Some even lump Diphylleia into a broad interpretation of Podophyllum. These are the current species in the genus:

Podophyllum aurantiocaule (Dysosma aurantiocaule, Dysosma furfacea) (1937)- from Yunnan, China (endangered)

Podophyllum sp. nov. boreale (Dysosma versipelle ssp. boreale) (1999) - from Hubei, China. In our trials, this is a completely different plant than P. versipelle ssp. versipelle, and deserves species status.

Podophyllum delavayi (Dysosma delavayi) (formerly P./D. veitchii) - from Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan, Shaanxi, China

Podophyllum difformis (Dysosma difforme) (1906) - from Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, China, and Vietnam - 2-5 flowers

Podophyllum emeiense (Dysosma majoense var. emeiense) (2011) - from Sichuan, China

Podophyllum glaucescens (Dysosma glaucescens) - 7 flowers

Podophyllum guangxiensis (Dysosma guangxiensis) (1999) - from Guangxi, China

Podophyllum hemsleyi (Dysosma hemsleyi) - 4 flowers

Podophyllum hexandrum (Sinopodophyllum hexandrum)

Podophyllum mairei (Dysosma mairei) POWO lists this as a synonym of aurantiocaule, which we disagree with.

Podophyllum majoensis (Dysosma majoensis, Dysosma lichuensis) - from Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, China

Podophyllum peltatum

Podophyllum pleianthum (Dysosma pleiantha, Dysosma hispida, Dysosma chengii) - from Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Zhejiang, China

Podophyllum tonkinense (Dysosma tonkinense) - This is often synonomized with P. versipelle, but our wild material is nothing like that species. It is also listed as a synonym of P. difformis.

Podophyllum trilobulum (Dysosma trilobulum) - from Sichuan, China, stems w/short hairs

Podophyllum tsayuensis  (Dysosma tsayuensis) (2018) - from Tibet (endangered)

Podophyllum villosum (Dysosma villosa) (2019) - from Guizhou, China - green leaves, hairy stems, hairy leaf back, 5-13 flowers, 6-10" tall

Podophyllum versipelle (Dysosma versipelle) (1883) - from Anhui, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Shanxi, Yunnan, Zhejiang - Endangered

Podophyllum versipelle ssp. sichuanensis - from Sichuan, China
